Jean-Philippe Marchand Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Les Cazetiers 2002 comes from the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, one of France's most celebrated regions for Pinot Noir.
Les Cazetiers is a highly regarded Premier Cru vineyard situated above the Château de Gevrey. Alongside Clos Saint-Jacques and Lavaux-Saint-Jacques, it is considered one of the finest Premier Cru sites in Gevrey-Chambertin, with a reputation for producing structured, complex and age-worthy wines.
The vineyard's marl-limestone soils contribute to the wine's structure and mineral character. The producer's current vineyard information describes hand harvesting, careful grape sorting and complete destemming, followed by cold pre-fermentation maceration and controlled extraction during fermentation.
The producer's published method for this vineyard specifies 12 months of oak maturation, with approximately 50% new oak.
The wine is expected to display a deep ruby-red colour, potentially developing garnet or brick-red reflections with extended bottle age.
The nose may reveal intense aromas of red fruits, complemented by roasted coffee, toasted notes and subtle earthy complexity.
On the palate, the wine is expected to show a firm structure with pronounced yet refined tannins. Its fruit character, savoury notes and oak-derived complexity may combine to create a powerful but silky texture.
The finish is expected to be persistent and structured, reflecting the character of Les Cazetiers. At this age, tertiary aromas such as dried fruit, forest floor, leather or mushroom may have developed, depending on storage and bottle condition.
This Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru pairs particularly well with richly flavoured dishes that complement its structure and savoury complexity.
Recommended pairings include:
Roast duck, pheasant and other game birds
Roasted lamb and tender beef
Beef bourguignon and other slow-braised meat dishes
Wild mushrooms, truffle dishes and mushroom risotto
Mature cheeses with earthy or nutty flavours
For Chinese cuisine, consider roast duck, soy-braised pigeon, mushroom dishes and gently seasoned beef. Avoid excessively spicy or sweet sauces that may overwhelm the wine's delicate aromas.
